They decide to write down the means by which they got the colds, which, as it turns out, was a bad date brought on by trying too hard to impress some girls.Law One: Know Your Limits. The boys are at a mall, scoping out the girls and they see two they'd like to date but know they can't, finally settling on two closer to their style. They pretend to be interested in sequined dresses, since that's what the girls are looking at, all the while observing the girls out of the corners of their eyes. Which leads up to making eye contact and then deciding they have a chance because the girls actually looked at them. As Andrew and Kirk ponder the best opening line, Dr. J breaks in with a contribution of his own: Hi. Contact made, names and telephone numbers exchanged, Andrew is now trying to make the first phone call, but is interrupted by Erin and Kirk, forcing him to hang up on the girl, Dana, twice in a row. Kirk steps in to show him how it's done and ends up humiliated when Renee laughs at him. All turns out well, though, when Dana calls Andrew back with information of where to find a good opera CD, and Andrew finally screws up the courage to ask her and Renee out. Which means all he has to do now is get money and a vehicle. The money he borrows from Dr. J. And he finally convinces his mother to loan him the car, despite her initial reluctance because it's been making funny noises. They pick up the girls, but first have to contend with Dana's father, an intimidating man who is not fooled by their pleasant demeanors. They take the girls to a super-expensive restaurant, and it all goes downhill from there. The conversation is stilted, the food not what they expected, and Kirk is a klutz. Dana and Renee ask to be taken home and Kirk first gets lost, then the car gets a flat. Andrew uses his powers to fix it before all is lost. And then the car really breaks down. It's freezing cold, the girls have left with the boys' jackets, and the boys have to walk home. Andrew makes the mistake of uttering the infamous line: it could be worse. Which is enough to make it worse -- it starts raining. Now it's the day after. The boys are writing their book (with Dr. J's help), quickly growing more despondent about the whole dating scene and their missed chance with the girls when Dana calls. She wants to return the jackets and make them soup. |
